Bowraville

Known as the "verandah post town" on account of its characteristically-wide verandahs, Bowraville is the oldest town in the Nambucca Valley.

Settlement was led by cedar loggers and Bowraville's cavernous main street harks back to the 1840s when bullock teams needed the space to turn full circle.

The township got a new lease of life in the 1960s and 70s when it became the focus for city people seeking an alternative lifestyle.

Much of the district's heritage is captured in the Joseph and Eliza Folk Museum, while, downstream at nearby Macksville, the Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage includes period furniture, costumes and horse-drawn vehicles in its collection.

The Taylors Arms Hotel, made famous by Slim Dusty as The Pub With No Beer, is 26km west of Macksville. Locals really fancy the odd knees-up and the calendar is marked with regular community celebrations including the Back to Bowra Festival over the October long weekend and a Blues Festival in April.
